Hazardous Objects for Toddlers

There are many objects in the house which can be dangerous to your toddler. The following is a list to help you get started removing objects from the path of your toddler.

Hazardous objects are all around our homes and having a curious child who has just made the exciting leap of moving around isn’t a good combination. The following list contains twenty-three common household items that are dangerous to toddlers. It is best not to keep dangerous object if you do not need them. If you do needed them, as there are everyday well used items included on the list, they need to be safely stored in a childproof area.

  • Sharp objects including knives and razors
  • Pointed writing objects including pens, pencils, markers
  • Small items that can be swallowed
  • Lightweight/ plastic bags from the store
  • Incendiary items such as matches
  • Tools of the trade/hobby such as sewing and painting
  • Toys belonging to older siblings
  • Button batteries from watches
  • Fake food/fruit
  • Cleaning products
  • Breakables
  • Light bulbs
  • Jewelry
  • Mothballs – items should be aired thoroughly after mothball use
  • Shoe polish
  • Perfumes and cosmetics
  • Vitamins, herbal, and medication
  • Whistles
  • Latex balloons
  • Dangerous party foods like nuts and hard candy
  • Guns
  • Strangulation hazards like cords, string, and yarn
  • Holiday hazards including decorative/symbolic items, gifts, and plants

Although this list doesn’t contain everything that can possibly be hazard to your child, but as you work your way through the house gathering items you will be able to find unique items belonging to your own household. Many of the items above can be swallowed, suffocate, chocking on, and many other possibilities to keep in mind as you are looking around your house.
