Tips on Children’s Safety Halloween Night.
Halloween Can Be Scary,
Halloween can be fun for any child and a lot of adults but it’s children that come to mind when Halloween is mentioned. It is one night of the year that children can wear costumes and knock on anyone’s door as they go from house to house. There is also another part of Halloween that can be scarier than some of the costumes that children wear, and that is about the safety of Halloween.
Costume safety is a must. In today’s market there is so much you have to be aware of when purchasing or making a costume for your child. This is the night when candles are lit inside your home and outside so you have to make sure the material in your child’s costume is fire proof. Another thing that screams out safety is the type of costume your child is wearing. Make sure that the openings for the mouth, eyes, ears and nose are big enough to let your child hear traffic, see traffic both ways and breath air without anything covering their mouth. You will need to check a mask if they are wearing one, making sure there is nothing there that could be inhaled, causing choking. If your child insist on carrying props to go with the costume make sure that the knives, spears, swords and such have no sharp tips on them.
When it comes time for trick or treating it should be free from danger but that’s not always the case. Make sure your children understand the rules and follow them carefully. They will be walking around many people that will be wearing costumes. Some of these people will not be little ones so make sure they know not to talk to strangers, no matter how cool they look in their costumes. Remind them not to get into strange cars or enter a strangers house while they go from door to door. Try to attach a piece of reflective material onto their clothing both front and back and try to get them to carry a flashlight. All of this can be done without making them to scared to go out on Halloween. You can start talking about safety tips a month before and have discussions on what they should or shouldn’t do. Remind them not to eat any of the treats until they get home where you can check them yourself.
Halloween should be fun and for the most part it is but you have to keep safety in mind. The best way to make sure your kids are safe is to go with them. You can always stand back at a distance while keeping an eye out for anything unusual. Dress up yourself and join your kids in the fun of the night. Maybe you shouldn’t go door to door for treats but you could sure have a lot of fun watching as your children knock on peoples doors and receive them.
