ELEVEN BABIES BORN TO MOTHER IN INDIA
Oh how easily we fall for exciting and unimaginable headlines like this amazing birth record when it hits the headlines of some local newspaper next to the check out in our local super market. It gets your attention and it sells the newspaper but it is little more than sensationalism and we gobble it up like honey cakes and cream and talk about it over coffee with our best girlfriend or guyfriend for days.
“My goodness,” I thought, when I read this, “Imagine giving birth to eleven babies all at once! Two or three babies at the same time are a handful, a challenge for a new mom to care for, but eleven! No way! This is amazing but it can’t be true,” I thought to myself and I did a bit of research. I was right. It is not true. It is a hoax but people all around the world will fall for this exciting news.
Here is what I found out about these miraculous eleven babies. The headline read “WOMAN Gives BIRTH to 11 Baby Boys At ONCE,” I knew it was probably not so but I had to read the article anyhow. It claimed to be a 21st Century record for 2012. These babies supposedly were all born healthy and well and it was rumored that six of them were twins. A little math calculation says if six were twins and she has eleven new offspring then one died. She gave birth to twelve. No, that didn’t happen either. The article goes on to say that the doctors were really surprised and shocked but happy to have a successful delivery. (They actually had eleven successful deliveries) It says very little about the parents, doesn’t even name them. That seemed a bit strange but there was a good reason for it. This mom of eleven new born babies does not exist. It is fiction.
I went to Urban Legends, Snopes.com and Hoax Slayer and then to Wikipedia and a Google search for more information to see what I could find out. They had a bit to offer. The first thing they said is that it is false. Here is what really happened. The day was 11-11-11 and in a hospital in Surat, India where 11 babies were born on this day. The babies were all healthy and successful deliveries and it was unique that 11 should have been born on this day of elevens but this fabricated article published over two months later sure caught a lot of attention. As for the photograph included with the sensational article, it is a photo of the 11 babies born on 11-11-11 (not to one woman but born to several new moms) with their doctors and nurses. (11-11-11 was supposedly a very blessed and lucky day according to several cultures and religious beliefs around the world.) The truth was cool enough without all the false headlines and sensationalism but I am sure millions around the world fell for it and bought that paper. (Just as a side note, I didn’t buy the paper; I read the article while I waited in line and have since seen it posted on Facebook and other places. It is a hoax but people will fall for and believe most anything if it is in the news.)

“if it bleeds, it leads!” “if a dog bites a man it’s not news, but if a man bites a dog it is!” news is a business, it is for readers to do their research. this has been going on from the beginning of time! It does not surprise me! great research! thanks for the clarification!

Ugh, I have a love hate relationship with sensational headlines. I like when something catches my eye, but I hate being disappointed by what actually happened. This happened recently when the headline read something like, “Boy Dragged By Car Mother Was Driving.” With so many crazy things happening, I was appalled and had to know more. I continued reading to find out that the mother was going pretty slow while she held the belt of her child who walked along. I’m glad it was only that, but I had all kinds of other pictures in my mind!

Well even if the story is true they always put there little spin on it as if to make it more interesting. But a human giving birth to eleven babies is very unrelistic. I dont think it really matters if you believe it or not what they want is to get your attention and for you to buy the news paper.

The title got ME to read your article! Thanks. Sensational headlines have sold newspapers and news since forever. Corny but profitable. YouTube has a lot of fake stuff on it. Some of it is done pretty well, too.

Thanks for doing the research. I fell for this story because India has a critical population problem and I thought they would stoop to anything to keep creating babies (to get sponsorships, rewards, fame, etc if this story were true). I usually check Snopes, but this time I found your article first. I personally feel relieved after reading your article.
