Daddy’s Coming Home
This is a short emotional story/ creative writing, of a innocent little girl waiting for her father to return home from war. But what she sees at the end was not expected.
We’ve all gathered to meet him; mummy, grandma and grandpa.
Daddy sent me a picture. In that photo he is wearing green overalls, and a big brown hat. He is kneeling down in front of a big green tent; he’s smiling at me shining his pearl white teeth. His skin looks very tanned, daddy looks handsome; handsome means looks nice. Next to him is also a big, brown fluffy bear.
Mummy told me that daddy sent me this letter: Dear Amy,
I will be coming home soon, here is a friend of yours that I’ll be bringing with me. His name is Teddy. I’ve been telling Teddy all about my special little girl and he can’t wait to meet you. He has big black eyes, and a pink ribbon tied around his neck.
Take care of mummy, and save me some kisses. Love Daddy.

I have brought Daddy’s picture with me, and all the letters that I’ve written. I can’t wait to see my Daddy, I love him very much.
Out on the street, there are lots of other people, and other children. Their Daddy’s must also be coming home today. I’m wearing my white dress, Daddy told me to come in white; he likes my white dress. I put it on for my Daddy, I love him very much.
Everybody is carrying a flag like mine, I have a little flag; some of the other people have big flags in front of them. But they are not waving them. They are holding it in front of their faces. They all look very sad, like mummy, grandma and grand dad. But I’m not sad, my daddy is coming home today.
There is a tall man walking in the middle of the road, he is wearing a black coat and pants; he is also carrying a black hat in-front of him. I don’t know why he is walking in the middle of the road, because there are cars behind him. I don’t walk on the road, because Daddy said it was dangerous.
The long black cars slowly come by, everyone goes silent. Mummy and grandma start crying, and running their fingers down the body of the car, as it goes by.
Behind the car is a brown box, on top of the brown wooden box is a flag just like mine and teddy is sitting there.
I love my Daddy, but I can’t see him.
