Are Birthday Spankings Okay?

This post answers the question I was asked about birthday spanking.
Some people have asked me the following question: “Since you don’t believe in spanking as punishment, do you believe in it as play, such as birthday spanking?”
To answer the question, I would say yes. Birthday spankings and other forms of playful spanking have never proven to be a problem. My parents gave me birthday spankings and I never saw any problem with it. The problem is that some children misinterpret the point of a spanking when it goes from being a horrible and painful experience to being a playful and fun experience. Another problem is that some parents give birthday spankings harder than others in order to counter this problem. A birthday spanking should not be a painful experience, as your birthday is supposed to be a fun time. A child should be given the number of licks with the parent’s hand on his clothed behind. It should in no way resemble a punishment spanking. One philosophy used by parents is that birthday spankings are meant to punish the child for any misdeed they were not punished for during the year. This is not the meaning of a birthday spanking. A birthday spanking is meant to be a fun experience for the child. The only lick that should hurt is the one to grow on, and even it should just sting.
There are some parents who believe it is okay to spank a child’s bare bottom on his birthday. Most of these parents tell the child to come to the room where they will be spanked as naked as they were on their original birthday. This is okay to do as long as the child is okay with it. If at any time the child feels it is too embarrassing or they have a problem with it you should stop. The child needs to be as comfortable with taking the birthday spanking as you are with giving it. I agree, birthday spankings should be playful but at the sake of you laughing at me, won’t they have a butt fetish as they get older? LOL After all how else would adults get the idea of using it as a form of domination . Just a thought.

My family was one that had the tradition of getting a birthday spanking in your birthday suit. They never made us do it, but it was all in good fun. We were pretty relaxed about nudity in our home anyway. We would strip naked and come into the family room, and we’d get a light spanking on the bare bottom. My siblings and I did this until age 18. I see nothing wrong with it.

We give our kids birthday spankings, but not when they’re naked and only with the hand. It’s not supposed to hurt. We reserve the naked spankings with the belt for when they’re being punished for something.

julia, thank you for your comment. i think you should read my spanking hurts series. belt spanking can cause serious problems later on in life as can the baring of the child’s bottom.

I think spanking on birthdays sends a mixed message to the child. My grandson isn’t normally corrected by spanking, and when he received his birthday spanking last year (age 8), he cried and struggled to get loose. His ignorant parents held him down to complete the spankings. Then they told him it was all in fun! Well, the birthday boy sure wasn’t having fun, and neither was I. In this case, I believe it was child abuse, and I told them so. I refused to have anything to do with it, and I told them that if they choose to spank him on his next birthday, I will not be there to witness it. In fact, if I learn that they have done it again, I will report them to DHS.

My mom gives me a birthday spanking for all my naughty behavior during the year. Even though I am an adult, I will be going over her knee on the 4th of July for a WELL DESERVED bare bottom spanking with her wooden spoon.

I was also and still is naked for my birthday spankings. For instance, my last birthday, I turned 16, my dad came into my bedroom, sat down on my bed, has me take off all of my clothes and takes me over his knee and spanks me 16×16 times plus one to live on, one to learn on, one to grow on, and one very hard one to remember. They all hurt, all 260 of them did. For birthday spankings it feels like smoke is coming off my bottom. When I am in trouble, it is much worse.
