10 Tips for Helping Your Child Grow Spiritually

In these troubled times, not only the street but even the schools are fraught with peril. However, an even graver threat hovers over Christian children today, endangering not only their physical well-being but also the salvation of their souls. This danger is a culture that values materialism, arrogance, and indulgence.

Here are the ten tips taken from the Bible that can help us in the realization of this noble purpose:

1. Make spiritual self-examination a lifelong process.

   “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that jesus Christ is in you?–unless indeed you are disqualified.”(II Cor. 13:5, New King James Version)

Parents should teach children the importance of spiritual self-examination. If children are already going to school, parents can teach them to grade their actions. By doing this, the children would be able to say whether or not they are living the Christian way.

2. Teach them the importance of faith through Bible stories.

   “Should I go on? There isn’t enough time for me to speak of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephtah, David, Samuel, and the prophets. Through faith they fought whole countries and won. They did what was right and receive what God had promise.” (Heb. 11:32-33, Today’s English Version)

By teaching our children Bible stories, we can help them come to a better understanding of what faith is.

3. Teach them to be dedicated in attending the worship service.

   “So then, my brothers, because of God’s great mercy to us I appeal to you: Offer youselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer.” (Rom. 12:1, TEV)

The worship service is the best opportunity for children to learn what Jesus said and taught.

4. Teach them proper moral values.

   “Since you have heard all about him and have learn the truth that is in Jesus, throw off your old evil nature and your former way of life, which is rotten through and through, full of lust and deception.” (Eph. 4:21-22, New Living Translation)

We should teach our children to distinguish right from wrong, good deeds from bad. Tolerating any immorality in our children’s speech or actions is not the way for us to show true and sincere love for them.

5. Do not neglect ‘overseeing’ their way of life.

   “She carefully watches all that goes on in her household and does not have to bear the consequences of laziness.” (Prove.31:27, NLT)

As our children get older, it is only natural that they would want us to respect their privacy. However, this does not mean that we should stop checking up on how they’re doing. Inasmuch as we remain concerned for their physical health and their educational well-being, all the more we have to continue monitoring their spiritual progress.

6. Do not hesitate to give advice.

   “My child, If sinners entice you, turn your back on them!

   “Don’t go along with them, my child! Stay away from their paths.” (Prov. 1:10, 15, Ibid)

In addition to monitoring, we should always give good advice to our children, especially when it comes to choosing friends and overcoming peer pressure.

7. Teach them their spiritual responsibilities.

“Instead, there must be spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes. You must display a new nature because you are anew person, created in God’s likeness-righteous, holy, and true” {eph.4:23-24, NLT}

Our children should understand that being a true member of the Church of Christ is more than just attending worship service and keeping away from Evil. We should also teach them to participate in all of the church activities that will lead to their spiritual growth principal among these activities is taking part In work of the savior by helping in The evangelical work of the Church. Let us bring our children to the grand evangelical mission and bible studies. Teach them the important of bringing people to listen to these as well as to the Church’s TV and radio programs.

 8. Teach them to respect the house of worship.

“Your testimonies are very sure; holiness adorns your house O lord forever.”{Ps.93:5 NKJV}

Emphasis should be given to respecting not only the holiness of the worship service but also the worship place. Lead by example our children should learn to behave well. We can make cleaning the house of worship and its surroundings a family activity especially during general cleaning “days of the locale. Simple things like picking uf wrapper and making sure that the children do not litter may seem like small things to other people but will not god. He can see that that child has learned to value those things that belong to him.

 9, Be a good example in trusting god.

“Humble yourselves, therefore under Gods mighty hand, that he may lift you up due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”{I Pt. 5:-7, New international version}

We should teach children that, more than anyone else, it is God who truly cares for us – that He will deliver us in times of need. Thus, we’re beset with problems. Our children need to see that we are firm to strong in facing anxieties. We can use times of trials to show our children how to us people who truly have God. The best way to show this to our children can be read in the tenth and final tip.

 10. Lead them in prayer.

 “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about anything. Tell god what you need, and thank him for done. ”And this same

God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”(Philip.4:6,19, NLT)

Let’s tell our children how they can be close to God and avail of His help through prayer. And if they get sick let’s teach them God’s instructions

to pray and to request the anointing of oil by Church elders, such us ministers, deacons, or deaconesses(Js.5:13-15).

Parents should set a regular time when all the family members can gather for a family prayer so that they can thank God for all His blessings and supplicate unto Him their needs, both material and spiritual. If we all make spiritual growth a shared family activity, then that will bring to each family member the happiness and peace that only God can give and, above all, true joy come the day of salvation.
