Life Camp Column: Party Hostess Gifts

Giving readers an opportunity to ask questions, and receive answers. Topics range from relationships, friendships, to in-laws, and children.

Dear Mrs. McVeigh,

If you are the hostess of a party and receive a gift, do you need to send the gift giver a thank you note?

Dear Anonymous,

If the person hands you the gift, a verbal thank you is fine. If the person is unable to hand you the gift, and you find it later or the next day, a follow up phone call would be appropriate.

Dear Mrs. McVeigh,

During the holidays we had some dear friends stay with us for a week.  I just received a very nice thank you note and thank you gift from them in the mail.  Do I write a thank you note for the thank you gift?

T.C.

Dear T.C.,

Especially since the family mailed the gift to you, you need to acknowledge that their package was received by you.  A phone call thanking them for their note and gift would be the appropriate action to take.  If you have time, a follow-up of a hand written note would be nice, not only to thank them for their gift, but thanking them for the (hopefully) great time that you had with them the whole week.  Even if you write the note, I would still call them right away so they know when you received the gift.
