Games and Activities for Children’s Parties

Here’s a few ideas for what to do at children’s parties: Some new ideas and variations on themes.

Traditional children’s parties are making a comeback. But that doesn’t mean they all need to be the same. Here are some ideas for activities and games for children’s parties.

Make A Monster

Shops like The Works will sell lots of craft items quite cheaply. Buy things like pom poms, lolly sticks, wobbly eyes and pipe cleaners. But glue dots to save time and mess. Challenge the children to make the best monster they can out of the craft items. Just make sure they have names on to be identified at the end!

Guess The Flavor

Blindfold children and challenge them to guess the flavor of jellybeans or chewy sweets. As long as it doesn’t last too long it can be fun for the other children as they can see the colors of the sweets and will know whether the guesser is right or not.

Touch Story

This is good for small groups, or if you can section off an area and have enough helpers. Tell a simple story and get the children to feel things. For example, some damp stones could stand for climbing a mountain or a walking stick for a pirate’s wooden leg. If you want to make it ickier, there are always peeled grapes and cold spaghetti. This takes a bit of preparation, but will be remembered!

Obstacle Courses

With as little as a skipping rope, a ball and a hula hoop you can make a safe kind of obstacle course. Instead of climbing maybe skip three times, go through the hoop and bounce a ball against the wall.

Crocodile River

With a few pieces of A4 paper you can play this game. Tell the children that they have to stand on “stepping stones” to cross the lake. Give them a few sheets of paper (one each for younger ones, one less than the group total for older ones eg 5 for a group of 6). Tell them the first team to get safely across the water (to the other side of the living room or garden) is the winner – but only if the whole team gets there safely.

Giant Board Game

If you make large dice out of card, and use hoops or card circles as “squares” then the children can be counters in their own giant board game! This works well with smaller groups, or if you have one of a pair as “counter” and the other as “thrower”.

Have a great party!
