Coming to a Store Near You: It’s Valentine’s Day

Forget the hype. Here are a few ideas to celebrate Valentine’s Day, the noncommercial way.

Everyone has become accustomed to the hype brought on by modern day commercialism with every holiday that marks the calendar. But we don’t have to give into it. Take at look at these ideas. Use them or come up with your own. Your partner will never forget

this Valentine’s Day.

The Setting

Staying home is the best place to be. Or on your patio if the weather permits. Better than waiting in line at a restaurant that is packed and loud.

The Mood

Some low lighting and about 30 lit tea candles on the table is absolutely beautiful to see. This is something that can’t be done in a restaurant and something that will be remembered forever.

The Music

This can be something soft and romantic or your partner’s favorite cd. Anything that will bring a smile is acceptable.

The Food

Now this get tricky. You can prepare a favorite meal for your partner or you can pick up a nice meal and take it home. My husband actually did this for me and picked up one nice steak dinner with all of the trimmings in the afternoon and then reheated it later. We actually shared that dinner and had leftovers. The great thing was that we could take our time and we weren’t stuffed. We sat for a long time at the table with the tea candles lit just talking and laughing about our unusual way of celebrating occasions.

The Flowers, The Candy and The Card

You don’t have to get flowers. They die so soon. But if you feel the need, pick up some good quality silk flowers at your local craft store and make a lovely bouquet in a wicker basket. The great thing about this is that they will last forever.

Forget the big heart box of candy. A delicate gourmet candy of a petite size will do beautifully.

As far as the card goes, if you have a computer, you can make one and put your own saying in it or an audio clip of the both of you. This is custom-made, so she’ll appreciate the effort put into it.

None of these things cost a lot of money and if more people do them, maybe that will make a statement that we’re tired of being manipulated by the hype and advertising. And if this seems like too much for Valentine’s Day, then a simple “I love you” will do.
