Even if you’re not a connoisseur, you can still throw a tantalizing and intimate wine-tasting party. You’ll soon figure out that it is not that daunting.

Keep the party mood light and informal. A good crowd of 10-12 people is manageable. You may invite a chef or someone you know who’s a wine lover to provide a few pointers.
Choosing Your Wine
When choosing your wine, go for popular grapes—chardonnay, Reisling, pinot gris, pinot grigio, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel and merlot. Select up to six different wines, all red or samples of both. Another good idea would be to choose wines from a certain region, such as France, Italy or your local area. This would even add to the thematic flavor of the party. A local wine merchant can help you with his ideas and recommendations.
Amount of Wine To Buy
A bottle yields about 10-12 glasses for tasting, or 5 glasses (standard 5-ounce wineglass) for drinking.

The Sampling
When sampling, start from light to more robust wines. Go from white to red. Small portions of about two ounces should be the ideal amount for tasting. Guests may later have more portions of a wine they especially enjoyed. Provide a bit of background information or an interesting story for each type. Space the wines at intervals, but be sure to have guests eating throughout the party.
Taking Notes
Provide pencils and pieces of paper so guests can jot down their responses and observations including their favorites. This way, you keep your guests involved and interactive.
For Safety
Make sure everyone drinks responsibly and in moderation.
