As survivalists we all tend to accumulate many diverse supplies of which are included a vast array of chemicals. Perhaps someone is collecting certain ones for the time when the balloon goes up and some “MacGyver” type actions are appropriate. You would be surprised what a little backyard type chemistry could accomplish.

Taking a quick glance at your arsenal of chemicals would reveal an assortment of toxic poisons that you may you have lurking in your home and never realized it? I noticed several cans of used oil based paint which I may never again make use of. I guess it is high time that I rid my home of many of these un-necessary poisons.

Of major concern to many people are the toxic effects these rouge toxic chemicals have on the family members and upon the household pets. After realizing the dangers that I was hording I gathered up all these unneeded products from the four corners of my home and garage to transport to a local drop off hazardous waste facility. While there I glanced at the vast number of other related products and came up with a short condensed list as follows.

High on the list were various building materials such as paints, varnishes, thinner and solvents, wood preservatives, rust removers and various toxic driveway sealer compounds.

Next we come to a rather large collection of chemicals involving automotive products. This list included gasoline, brake fluids, transmission oil, kerosene, power steering fluid, charcoal lighter, used motor oil and the filters and used antifreeze.

Those items listed for within the home were various types of unsafe household cleaners like spot remover compounds, rug cleaner, metal cleaner, oven sprays, bathroom cleaners and drain cleaners.

Pesticides tend to present significant danger since we eat the foods that it protects. These items which fall into this group are insect killers, flea products, weed killers, moth balls and crystals and various fertilizers that contain weed killer.

Lastly on the list we have a selection of miscellaneous items such as photographic chemical supplies, acids and corrosives of many types, swimming pool chemicals, mercury type thermometers and compact fluorescent style light bulbs.

Granted many of these items we can not completely do away with but in many cases we could easily switch to a safer and greener type of composition. I hope by my current housecleaning actions that I have made my home just a little safer and better to live in.
