Putting Together Your Speedy Emergency Earthquake Kit
This is a kit you can throw together in just a few minutes. When you have more time, add to it in order to survive an earthquake in your area. It can happen anywhere.
If you have not put together an earthquake emergency kit yet, now is the time. This is one way to put together a speedy kit in order to be ready for any emergency. It may hit in the middle of the night when the only thing you are wearing is your skin. Once you are outside the home and away from danger, you are going to want to find something to wear.
Grab a box and throw in copies of your medical records and other important documents. Next add a change of clothes and sturdy shoes. You may be walking through a lot of rubble and you need to protect your health. Add a pair of good gloves so you can become a part of the rescue effort removing fallen buildings and other obstacles.
Add a few bottles of water and a juice so you have something to drink. The water will keep you alive and the juice will provide a sugar shot when you need to calm down. Hard candy mints will do the same thing and provide a bit of comfort for adults and kids. If you have pop top cans of fruits and vegetables, add them to the box for a bit of food.
Use a good flashlight or battery powered lantern during the night. Do not light candles in case of a gas main break. You do not want to blow up the rest of the neighborhood while trying to survive. Add to this a basic medical kit and you have your speedy emergency earthquake kit ready. Keep it locked in the trunk of your car or truck so you do not have to dig down through the rubble of a fallen home for it.
If an earthquake hits during the middle of the night, try to remain calm and move away from windows to avoid breaking glass. Keep a pair of slip on shoes near the bed at all times. As soon as you can, get out of the house and into the opening. Watch for fallen electrical wires and earth cracks. Make sure everyone in the family is accounted for and in good shape.
Once you have done the basic in your own home and family, move on to rescue efforts carefully. Always keep someone in your personal family or group posted where you are at all times. Do not let yourself get separated from family members and children. Crimes happen during disaster, because people are distracted trying to survive. Keep at least one parent with the children at all times.
Be patient and wait for help if you are locked into an area because of damage.
To extend your emergency equipment before a disaster strikes, add a small shovel to your kit to help clear away rubble. Add energy food and easy to eat long storage food. Add a copy of all your ID to your emergency kit to keep in the car. It will be much easier to replace later on.
Create a plan for a meeting place in your neighborhood if you are separated from family members. In case of an extreme disaster arrange for a meeting place at a distant location. When you arrive at a meeting location go to the nearest emergency center and place your name on the list of arrivals so those looking for you will know you have arrived.
Earthquakes seem to be more common and stronger than in the past, so prepare now for an emergency. It is a smart way to live and you will be comfortable and ready to help.
