Dollar Tree Spice Rack

We all appreciate the fact that our survival food rations can quickly become pretty boring to consume after an initial period of time. The children will start to push their plates back in disgust while the adults fumble and shift the food around on the dinner plate, hoping they won’t notice its bland taste.

Usually the best way to resolve a problem of this sort is the same way that you would with the meals which you prepare in your normal kitchen environment, add spices to them.

I have personally found that I can combine several different foods together and add spices to change the taste and agreeability completely. As an example, I can take a can of cream of asparagus soup and combine it with noodle and spices for a tasty treat. I can take a package of Ramen Noodles and prepare it at least ten different ways with the help of spices. By merely changing the particular spices which I use in it, I effectively modify the taste accordingly.

It doesn’t take a considerable sum of money to initially set up an emergency spice rack. A visit to your local dollar tree will quickly net you many interesting spices to add to your collection. I would at this point like to express a word of caution. When I first started out storing my spices I would always purchase supplies in quantities of ten. In the case of spices this is an entirely wrong approach. Spices last for quite some time so you really do not need the large supplies that you would with other survival foods. Keep in mind that over a period of time these spices will lose some of their potency and flavor. In addition, do not forget to rotate your stock to keep fresh supplies on hand.

I store all my spices on a separate storage rack the same way as I do with my other survival foods. I have found it better to keep all my food rations in a separate room since over time the spices will tend to smell up the room. When walking into my food room you can readily smell the various spices that I maintain. It often becomes a challenge to pick out and identify the aromas from the various spices.

All in all the use of spices will brighten up your survival meals to the point where your family will look forward to each meal. Just because we may have to reside under less then desirable conditions in the event of an emergency, does not mean our palette must suffer as well.
