Could You Survive a Disaster

What if the “hype” about the Mayan Calendar ending in December 2012, does have something to do with a major disaster, how long would you survive?

The talk about the Mayan calendar coming to an end this year, has lead alot of people to believe that alot of the human race will parish. With all the earthquakes, volcanoes, and storms going on around the world, no one knows if there is going to be a ‘huge’ disaster that will effect the world.

Just for the heck of it, let’s say one of those Super Volcanoes did erupt and spewed ash into the air that blacked out the sun for a month. The  temperatures around the world would all drop, and plant life would start to die. Would you have enough survival skills and supplies to keep you and your family going for a month or more?

It’s amazing but, more third world countries would survive better than the richer ones. And the people who live off the land in the richer countries would have more food than the rich. Let’s face it, disaster leads to “panic” and when people think they need to stock up, the grocery store shelves go bare, quickly.

So, again do you have enough supplies and know how, to survive for a long period of time? I personally right now have enough food for about a month, if the power doesn’t go out. I do have a BBQ grill to cook with, and plenty of wood instead of charcoal. As of right now I have enough to get through a month, but I would have to come up with plans to get more supplies if it were any longer.

It’s scary, but if you’ve ever been through a bad storm with long power outages, you know how tough it could be, even if it were for a few days.  And to be honest, it really wouldn’t have to be something ’super’ to knock out power to your home.  I’m going to make a new list of what it ‘would’ take to survive for a long period of time if I had to, and start filling that list. You never know what tomorrow is going to bring, but I hope, I’ll be ready, will you?

  1. Moses, A few years ago I would have had enough supplies at home to survive for probably six months, now that I live in a small apartment near stores, we could survive a couple of weeks, maybe more. During the coming of 2000, I had enough of everything on hand for all the family. I had the pantry full of non perishable food and under all the beds, I had jugs of water stacked on the back deck. I was ready. Maybe we should prepare again.

  2. maybe people need to wake up. the “end of the world” isn’t coming like that… it’ll come when we probably least expect it. thanks

  3. I hope to think I could survive the worst, but I am waking up to a reality that I may not be so prepared, and like you said Dragoonk, it is going to happen when we least expect it.
