A Case for Preparedness and Rough Economic Times

I recently glanced at an commentary that essentially stated there were over 250 million people that are affected by disaster every year. These figures are unquestionably believable and I have no doubt in my mind that they are accurate. The same article proceeded to say that in order to preserve the safety and readiness of your family you should be amassing what is referred to as Ready food Kits.

The sales force at the originating company say that business for them has never been better then now. They claim that they have seen hundreds of people who are facing the prospects of unemployment in the near future so as an option the people are turning to their survival foods. While the company stresses that they want to help everyone be ready for any sort of emergency they fail to comprehend one major point at this time. Our economy is so bad that people can not afford to procure these survival kits.

Granted I fully concur that the people should have a ready supply of emergency food and supplies accessible if and when they need them but today’s wage earner with the unforeseeable future that lies ahead simply can not afford to pay several thousand dollars for freeze dried food.

In its place I would propose storing up on canned foods which your family eats and likes. Do not store up on anything that is doubtful as far as the family members liking it. If they don’t like Spam then do not store up on it. If they do like tuna then by all means put some extra cans of tuna in your food storage.

These emergency rations will be needed someday so you should start planning accordingly. As you can readily see it isn’t necessary to rush out and purchase the dehydrated number ten cans of over priced commercial foods when you can basically accomplish the same thing at home with your normal store bought vegetables, fruits and meats.
