How to Paint Using a Roller

For large, flat surfaces, painting by roller is easier than painting by brush for the average do-it-yourself painter.

Select a roller with a comfortable-to-hold handle and try several dry sweeps across the surface until you get the hang of it.

When you buy a roller, you find that it may come as part of a set –the roller itself, and a sloping metal or plastic tray.  Pour paint into the tray until approximately two-thirds of the corrugated bottom is covered.

Dip the roller into the paint in the shallow section of the tray, and roll it back and forth until it is well covered.  If the roller drips when you lift it from the tray, it is overloaded.

Squeeze out some of the paint by pressing the roller against the upper part of the tray above the paint line.

Apply paint by moving the roller back and forth over the surface being painted – first up and down in long, even strokes, then across.  Reload the roller with paint as needed.

Rollers used with alkyd or oil-base paints should be cleaned with turpentine or mineral spirits.  When latex paint has been used, soap and water will do a satisfactory cleaning job.  If any kind of paint has been allowed to dry on the roller, a paint remover or brush-cleaning solvent will be needed.
