Cigarette Rolling Tutorial

This tutorial teaches the basics of rolling cigarettes.

Many people choose to roll their own tobacco, maybe this is because it is cheaper? On the other hand others may just prefer it to normal cigarettes. This tutorial demonstrates how to roll a cigarette in 3 steps but before we begin we should make sure we have the right materials.

You Should Have:

  • Tobacco: This is sold in many different forms, some come in pouches others come in a tin. It doesn’t really matter what kind you use because it’s pretty much all the same stuff anyway.
  • Cigarette Papers: Sold in newsagents and convenience stores.
  • Filter Tips: These are optional but I strongly recommend using them as they filter out a lot of the dangerous chemicals in tobacco. We all know smoking isn’t the healthiest thing in the world so lets be on the safe side and use filter tips.

Ok, here we go:

Step 1

  1. Take a paper from the pack and hold it open with your index finger while resting it on the tips your thumb and middle finger. You will notice that there is a shiny strip on one side of the paper, this is the glue that holds the cigarette together. You must make sure that this strip is facing towards you.
  2. Now with your other hand grabs a small amount of tobacco from your pouch or tin. Some of the tobacco may be tangled but it is easy separate it.
  3. place the tobacco into the middle of the paper.

Ok, that’s the easy bit over, the next step will take some time and practice to perfect.

Step 2

  1. Use your index fingers to even out the tobacco so that there’s a reasonable amount of tobacco in the paper. If you put too much in simple put some back, likewise if you don’t have enough simply add some more then smooth it out again. Be sure to leave a small space at one end as this is where we will put the filter.
  2. Use your thumbs and index fingers to shape the cigarette by rubbing the top of each side of the paper against the other. Once the main body of tobacco feels quite round put the filter in. The filter should not poke out over the edge of the paper.
  3. Next use you thumbs to push one end of the paper down to make the cigarette shape. From the side it should look like the number 6 with the tobacco in the middle.

Now this is where the actual “rolling” comes into it.

With your thumbs, roll the cigarette upwards as if you were making a pencil shape. At this point you lick the shiny tab on the paper and close the Cigarette.

Step 3

Remove any excess tobacco from the tip of the cigarette and put it back in your tobacco container. And there you have it! Your very first roll-up.

Remember to keep your tobacco in a reasonably cool place or it will dry out.

  1. Actually there are hundreds of rolling tobaccos available and they are far from being all the same. A forum which features discussions about the various merits of the different tobaccos is http://forum.ryorevolution.com/

It’s also much easier and faster to use pre-formed filtered cigarette tubes, they are usually sold in boxes of 200 and only cost about 1 cent each ($2/box). Small hand-held “shooters” are availble for under $10 and make it easy to make a pack of cigarettes in about 10 minutes. Much more information about the advantages of rolling your own are at http://ryorevolution.com/

  2. To be honest danb, I’m only really saying that because I don’t want to be seen promoting any paticular brand. And although there are many tobacco connoisseurs out there who disagree with me, to the average smoker most brands seem similar

  3. lol how can you call people lame when you have a name like gerald

  4. i find it easier to put the filter in first, it helps when you are shaping the tobacco, and you dont have to worry about keeping the tobacco in the right place when You put the filter in
