Sushi and any raw fish is scary too. I think it is the Norwalk virus that comes from contaminated fish. With cold and flu season fast approaching, people are going to be more susceptible to succumbing to food poisoning because their defenses are low. Add elderly, pregnant or young to the mix and it could be deadly. Scary stuff.

Great add Jotter and you are exactly right. Freezing and Refrigeration only SLOW the process of growing bacteria. It does not get rid of it nor does it stop it. Great addition to this article. Thank you.

Downright scary!
One thing:
If you cook the chicken, it does kill all the bacteria. If you go over a 100°C for long enough (most/if not all bacteria can't survive a temperature of about 80°C) you should be safe. Freezing food doesn't kill the bacteria, it keeps them in a dormant state. That means your chicken can still be contaminated even if you froze it right away.(unless it's been sterylized, which I doubt;) ) So cook your meat and fish.
I do like sushi, I just can't help it.

Oh yes. Good thing that you didn't eat the cooked patties. It is very likely that the blood and fat juices from the raw patties seeped into the cooked ones. Thanks for your time to comment!

Excellent reminders, Andromeda,

I remember attending a cook-out and one of the hosts put cooked hamburger patties back on the plate that had held the raw patties. I was afraid to eat the cooked patties.

You might want to add that baking mixes (like Bisquick and cake mixes) have a definite shelf life. They contain a powdered form of eggs that spoils. If you haven't used a box of mix up in about six months it is safer to throw it away and get a new one.

When you open a box of baking mix it is a good idea to write the date on the box so you have a general idea of how long you've had it.
