Why use salt, when there are herbs and spices available to flavor your meals.

Instead of Salt

                It appears everything we consumer has salt, sodium or MSG; so while taking the salt shaker off the table, we can find ways to flavor our food in ways many people count not imagine. Salmon fillet with lemon and dill, or Chicken seasoned with Rosemary; the ideas are endless.  So let us take a moment and see what spices work best with Meat, Poultry, and fish along with vegetables; fresh of course.

                Let us take a look at our basic spices or herbs, Basil great on beef, chicken and lamb; many love this herb on fresh mozzarella along with tomatoes, this is great but try to purchase low sodium cheese. Cinnamon is not a spice that is given much thought, but it can really make a leg a lamb tastier, with a baked potato with chives, and carrots. You can add a little cinnamon to carrots to sweet out it tender sweetness.

                Garlic is a spice that is very potent, is included in so many recipes from all over world, Italy, Spain, Asia, Japan as well as right here in the United States. Used in recipes with chicken, lamb, and pork one must learn how to adjust the amount of garlic to use according to your personal taste.
Herbs

                While ginger taste good on meat, poultry and seafood, use sparingly until you taste buds get adjusted. This is another spice or herb that has health related benefits. There are several herbs that are great for medicinal purposes, and most people have no clue. To name a few sage is used to promote healing of post-op patients or can be helpful in getting rid of the common cold. Take a look at onions; they help with sinus congestion as well as chest congestion.

                When choosing to create a low sodium meal using herbs and spices, remember if your recipe calls for cheese, look for low sodium; choose fresh vegetable and fruits, instead of can items. If you must use a pre-packed item, use frozen, as there are less preservations, and healthier; than canned products and always taste better.

  1. I do not use salt in my diet and I am highly allergic to MSG, as it triggers migraine headaches. Natural herbs and spices are the only way to go!

  3. I mix my own spices and herbs. I haven’t used salt in a long time I use about a half dozens spices along with parsley, basil and garlic. I also grate lemon and orange peel and mix them all together in a shaker and we love it. We really don’t need salt for flavoring.
