How can ice cream help in nutrition?

Ice cream has been part of our growth. From the moment our minds set its own reasoning, we are enchanted by the colorful heaps of this delicious thing that has made us crave for more.
Cheese, chocolate, purple yam, mocha have been the best choices for many years. Later on, ice cream makers discovered that fruits particularly the strawberries and mangoes would make a better change in popularity as new flavors. Years after, there came out another range of new expertise which gave birth to the ever-famous rocky road, cookies and cream, fruit salad, and double dutch.
The name, ice cream, which was originally known as iced cream, differs in many countries of the world. Frozen custard. Frozen yogurt. Sorbet. Gelato. Nonetheless, making ice cream had been difficult in the early years. Its makers would cut ice from the lakes and ponds during the cold season and would store them in the ground, or in wood frames, or in ice houses, for its use in the summer.
Today, because of our passion to ice cream, makers have been fixated in discovering new tastes for its lovers. Even the most unusual flavors that people would least expect have been featured in Philippine television.

The first one was the garlic ice cream. We are used to seeing garlic as spice for our food, or herbal medicine for hypertension. But now it is used as main ingredient for a delectable ice cream.

The salted egg or “itlog na maalat” which Filipinos often use as viand garnished with fresh tomatoes has also been launched as flavoring in a special ice cream.

And what do we do with malunggay leaves or moringa oleifera? It is a variety of nutritious vegetables that we usually mix with meat, fish, or chicken spiced up with coconut milk or “gata ng niyog”. But now, nutritionists have decided to make an ice cream recipe out of this to help in the growing number of malnutrition. Thus, in hopeful possibility, other vegetables could also fit in.
Truly, ice cream has earned a big place in our hearts. Can we take advantage of this? So that in the future, we could say that it is not only a craving, but a passion to save life.

An interesting write. I like ice cream but vegetable flavours don’t really appeal to me. It is good to know that malnutrition can be treated this way. Good work.

I love ice cream. But I can’t imagine the taste of garlic in it as well as the malunggay and salted egg. I might give it a try though when I come back in Manila just for the thrill of weird taste hehehe…
