How to Season a Skillet

Learn how to season a skillet to prevent rust and corrosion.
Regular cast-iron skillets need to be “seasoned.” This process helps prevent rust and corrosion that can happen over time to your expensive cookware. Some cast-iron cookware will have instructions for seasoning. This article is not meant to replace original or existing instructions.
What You’ll Need:
- cast-iron skillet
- sink
- dish soap
- shortening or cooking oil
- oven
- paper towels

Method
STEP 1: Check for original instructions. If you don’t have them, preheat your oven to 350° F.
STEP 2: Wash and dry your skillet. Make sure there is no water left on the skillet.
STEP 3: Brush shortening or cooking oil all over the inside surface of the skillet.
STEP 4: Heat in oven for one hour.
STEP 5: Remove and let cool. Wipe out skillet with paper towels.
TIPS:
Season your skillet before you use it for the first time. Also season your skillet periodically after that.
WARNINGS:
Do not rewash skillet after seasoning.
