Homemade Baby Food

Worth the hassle?

Homemade Baby Food is the latest craze for new and expectant mothers, sweeping across America, i am just wondering wether the mothers of Britain will join this fad.

So far, it has been deemed cost-effective, simple and healthier for newborns. Homemade baby food also allows you to control what you young ones are eating, ie, the ingredients, where to store and if it can be re-heated. Fruit and vegetables together can also make a tasty, nutricious meal but always remember not to combine food straight away. Let the child eat one at a time to look out for any allergies the child might have.

The only tools that you would need to prepare this healthier option for your kids is a food processor or blender. It’s as simple as that! An ice cube tray to store them in would also be convienant.

Just cook the vegetables as you normally would, using only water. Either the microwave or hob are still ideal for this. Drain the vegetables before you puree this to make the appropriate consistency.

Using this technique gives you a chance to introduce your children to fruits and vegetables that regular supermarket baby food may not have, such as spinach, brocolli, squash, potatoes, cauliflower and even avacado!

Of course the regular versions of peas and carrots are still as tasty and healthy!

The majority of fruits do not need to cooked first, unless, however, they need to be softened. Tougher fruits such as apples and pears would need to be peeled and cooked prior to blending.

Bananas, plums, berries and melons can just be peeled, washed and pureed, which is very efficent.

Remember! Do not feed strawberries to a young child until the age of around one or over as these have a higher risk of allergies.

Once you have the baby food to the desired consistency, you can pour into the ice cube tray and freeze, so whenever you hear that all familiar cry, you can just pop it into the microwave and voila!

Always remember to label the foods so you know exactly what you are feeding you little ones.

Give it a go! It is so rewarding to know that you baby is eating great, healthy foods and you know the exact ingredients!
