Five Healthy Substitute Foods

In this day and age with all the corners of our kitchen infested with processed ingredients, here are a few to replace those.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has a much higher saturated fat content than most other oils, and while many people have been lead to believe this is bad, it is actually a much healthier alternative to other oils.  This is because we have been lead to believe saturated fats are very bad but in reality that isn’t true.  Saturated fats are better for us than trans fats which are present in more quantity in oils like canola oil and soybean oil, which also contain unsaturated fats which are way worse for you.  You most often buy coconut oil as a solid but once you start heating it , it melts.  While canola oil is cheaper the benefits of coconut oil are worth it.

***NOTE*** You can buy either refined or unrefined coconut oil, unrefined still has coconut flavor and refined doesn’t.

Agave Nectar

While not always an option, this is an excellent substitute for sugar in things like coffee, tea and an other things were the state of matter the sugar is in doesn’t matter.  Agave Nectar is a sweetener derived from the Agave plant, which is up to 1 1/4 sweeter than sugar and it’s glycemic index is exponentially lower.  A foods glycemic index is how long it take for it to be absorbed into the blood stream.  The lower the glycemic index is the better because it wont cause spikes in the blood sugar.  Perfect for people with hypoglycemia.

Brewed Imported Tea

The most prominent of Brewed Imported Teas being Black Tea, these have nearly half the caffine of drip brewed coffee and close to the same amount as brewed coffee, so if you need that caffine bost to start your day, try this instead.  Tea is much more healthy than coffee with many benefits like antioxidants.  Since it has half the caffine of regular coffee you might have to drink double what you normally drink but it is more healthy and worth it and tea also doesn’t take long to make.

Bulgar Wheat

Bulgar wheat is basically a rice substitute.  You cook it the same way, although it can be cooked by just soaking it in water, and you can use it in dishes like pilafs, tabbouleh and most things like that.  It has the same nutritional value as whole wheat which is more healthy than white rice.  A great choice this is one of many rice substitutes like brown rice, quinoa and others.

Any Organic Ingredients

I’m sure you’ve heard of them, but most people don’t know the true benefits of organic ingredients.  Organic foods are basically foods grown or raised as nature intended them.  This means no pesticides, no genetically engineered seeds or anything of the sort, they would have grown the same way had no one been tending to them.  Of course organic products are more expensive but many claim it is worth it.

P.S. I have all these products in my house and am not yet bankrupt or diseased, so it must be worth a try for you right?
