Easy and Inexpensive Ways to Eat Healthy

In today’s financially difficult times, people are having trouble making ends meet. Eating healthy in some cases is taking a backseat to eating altogether. Healthy daily meals need not cost a lot of money to make. There are many ways to sneak healthy elements into almost every meal.

Adding a serving of fruit or vegetables to every meal when possible is an excellent way of including an extra nutritional punch to meals. By adding a portion of the fruits and vegetables you already have on hand you’re adding extra fiber and nutrients to the meal. How about romaine lettuce and tomatoes on that turkey sandwich? A side of sliced cucumber with vinegar and spices instead of potato chips is an excellent companion to a sandwich.

Vegetables make a more healthful side dish.

Breakfast can be made extra healthful several ways. If you can not afford costly whole grain breads and other whole grain baked goods at their standard price, try buying day old versions at a reduced price. Oatmeal, whole grain cereals, pancakes with fruit, and low fat yogurt are also great options.

Many grocery stores and bakeries have sales of such items very frequently. Baking such items yourself can often be an option as well. Despite the fact that ingredients may be initially costly, the number of things prepared with one set of ingredients can often save money. Baking and cooking at home enabling you to create more servings of food items. Baking at home stretches the food dollar and helps you avoid paying for fancy packaging or the cost of gas getting to and from a store.

For lunch, try three bean chili and cornbread. Chili is easy to make and can provide multiple meals. Lean ground beef or turkey can be added (try using leftovers) to this idea or you can use vegetables along side the beans. Beans are a great source of fiber, folic acid and protein. Beans are inexpensive and healthy no matter which type you use.

For healthier dinners try trimming any excess fat from meats. Steamed or roasted vegetables make excellent healthful side dishes. When cooking pasta meals add extra vegetables into sauces, for picky eaters try using veggie puree in sauces to boost vitamin and mineral intake. Eating inexpensively and healthfully isn’t as difficult as it may seem. It is just a matter of using what you have on hand and a bit of ingenuity to eat a healthy diet without going to too much if any extra expense.
