Defrosting Meat, Fish, and Poultry

The microwave oven is a very good tool to defrost your meats, but don’t let them stay in to long or you will have tough meat.

While it’s possible to cook meat in a microwave oven, it is not preferable. Microwave ovens are best used to defrost meats.

To defrost meat: Place in a micro safe dish or a wrapper, but be sure to punch holes in the wrapper. Turn over and separate the meat pieces half way through defrosting. Make sure no part of the meat begins to cook. It’s ok if the meat in the middle stays very slightly frozen.

If you have a large piece of meat, it will take longer to defrost. Watch it closely and turn it often to keep it from cooking in spots. Its better to take it out, and let it set on the counter a few minutes before it completely thaws than to let it get to hot.
