Date Pinwheels

1 pound chopped dates
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups flour
Cook dates, 1/2 cup sugar and water until thick (2 to 3 minutes). Cool. Cream butter, 1/2 cup white sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Add beaten egg. Add vanilla and dry ingredients. Roll dough 1/4-inch thick. Add chopped nuts to date mixture and spread on dough. Roll up like jellyroll and slice in 1/4-inch slices. Bake on cookie sheet for 8 to 10 minutes for 400 degrees.
