Change Your Relationship with Food
Is your relationship with food unhealthy?
More people than ever in this country are overweight, and this is largely because of the type of relationship that they have with their food. This starts with childhood, so if you are a parent you should make sure that your child has a healthy relationship with the food that they’re eating right from the start, or you might find that it could cause them some severe issues later on in their lives. Luckily, if you were brought up to have a bad relationship with food, there are still things that you can do to change that.
One of the hardest things that people need to do for themselves is to stop seeing food as a treat. When we are children, a lot of the things that we get given as a reward for good behaviour are food based, and this means that it is very easy to get into the habit of rewarding ourselves as we get older, or starting to use food as a way to deal with stressful situations in life. Often, we are not even hungry when we get something to eat, and we will find that we choose to get something because we feel as though it should be a meal time, or because we are bored.
We should remember that everything we put into our body has an effect on us. If we are putting horrible greasy foods with a lot of fat into our mouths, then that fat is gathering around our organs. If we do that too often, there is a chance that we will become very unhealthy indeed. You don’t have to worry about having the occasional unhealthy thing, but if it starts to become a habit then you should try to change things about your life.
Eating things that are good for you is vital with regards to be able to have a healthy body. Drinking a lot of water is very important, but this is something that a lot of people don’t even think about when they’re on a diet. Instead, they will just cut down on the amount of food that they’re eating, but still choose to eat the wrong thing, which isn’t really helping at all in the long term. You should try slowly replacing the things that you eat with better options, for example switching from white to wholemeal bread, swapping chocolate for cereal bars with fewer calories and less fat, and eating things like yoghurts for dessert instead of biscuits. Doing this gradually would mean that you wouldn’t have to worry about it being a sudden change, and you could enjoy the benefits without getting too stressed about changing a lot of things all in one go. Once you have managed to change the way you think about food, you will find that it is a lot easier for you to be able to live the healthy and happy lifestyle that you and your body deserve.
