Whitening Toothpaste

Are we ingesting potentially toxic chemicals each day?

If you’ve ever noticed the difference between brushing your teeth with whitening toothpaste and then a toothpaste that isn’t specifically for whitening your teeth, you will have noticed the sometime nauseating feeling you can get when using whitening toothpaste.

I have always used a whitening toothpaste and just put up with it thinking it was my body that couldn’t handle the taste of it, until I asked around and realised that many of my friends and family where experiencing the same thing. It got the the point where I was vomiting every time I brushed my teeth for me to decide to try a non-whitening toothpaste and you no what presto no more vomiting or nauseating feelings I could finally brush my teeth in peace.

This experience has prompted me to look into the ingredients used in whitening toothpastes, many Australian brands didn’t have their ingredients up on website but I found a Canadian dental care site that did and to my horror the amounts of warnings for this whitening toothpaste where unbelievable.

There in bold letters was CAUTION and WARNING. It said if this product is ingested it can cause irritation of the mouth, throat and other tissues of the gastro-intestinal system. And ingestion of large amounts can cause irritation, pain, vomiting and diarrhea. There was also warnings of the effects for contact with eyes or skin, skin absorption, injection, inhalation, chronic effects and then the signs and symptoms of over exposure.

All this from an in balance of three chemicals Silicon Dioxide, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and Sodium Fluoride. In balance these chemicals are harmless however as stated if an in balance occurs it can be potentially harm full.

Whitening toothpaste, is whiter teeth really worth it? I don’t think so.
