Ways to Easily Save Energy Around The House

Quick and simple tips to save the planet – and your energy bill – around the home.

  • It might sound basic – but turn the light off when you’re not in the room. You don’t need the light, it’s not doing your electricity bill any favours and it means the bulb will burn out more quickly – flick that switch!
  • Use light bulbs with a lower wattage. They’re much more energy efficient and less expensive to run as well.
  • Turn the tap (faucet) off when you’re not directly using it. In between washing the dishes, when you’re brushing your teeth – all the little savings add up.
  • Don’t leave appliances like phones or video consoles to charge overnight – as well as wasting energy when they finish charging partway through the night, it means the battery of the appliance will wear out more quickly and you’ll end up having to buy a new one a lot sooner.
  • Try not to leave appliances like TVs or computers on standby overnight or when not in use, as they eat up a surprising amount of energy – turn them off at the wall.
  • Do you really have to put the heating on if you feel chilly? First you could try layering up your clothes, snuggling in a blanket or even lighting a fire if you have a fireplace – free alternatives to the energy-guzzling and expensive central heating.
  • Wait until you have a full load of clothes to use the washing machine – don’t just use it for a few items at a time. Washing machines can use anything from 70 to 155 litres of water per wash – you can avoid wasting so much water – and save money on your water bill! – by only using the machine at full capacity.
  • Take a shower instead of having a bath, and try to switch to a low-flow shower head if you can – it uses half the amount of water a power shower does. If you do have a bath, does it really need to be a deep one? A shallow bath will get you just as clean. A deep bath should be a luxury, maybe once a fortnight – not a regular occurrence.

  1. These are great tips! I practice most of them; am guilty of leaving my computer is sleep mode instead of turning it right off though. If we all do a few little things throughout the day, we will notice a decrease in utility bills at month end.
As for my furnace, it hasn’t moved from 21 degrees Celsius since we put in the new thermostat. We used to have a programmable one, but our plumber said the analog one is better; less trouble with them and more efficient in the end.

  2. Great tips for leading a greener lifestyle.

  3. good tips! though the first one seems silly to me, because i don’t leave a room and leave the lights on, but apparently some people do. thanks for sharing!
