How to Save At the Gas Station

Four tips on how to save money at the gas station.

Obviously we are all trying to squeeze every drop we can out of the gas stations as possible due to the price jump in gasoline in the past few years. Well, here are a few tricks to help get more gas for what you pay.

  1. Fill up your vehicle in the morning. Gasoline expands when it gets warm so you want to fill up when it is cold. Gas pumps don’t have temperature-compensation and therefore the gallon you pump may not be a gallon if you pump it when it is hot. When you pump when the gas is cool it will be much denser and you will get much more gasoline for less money.
  2. If the gas station is getting filled by a tanker truck when you get ready to fill up, don’t fill up. When filling the station’s tank, some dirt and mud may be kicked up and get into your car, damaging your engine.
  3. Fill up your vehicle when it is half-full or more. Gasoline evaporates quickly so the less air in your tank the better. Gas stations have an internal floating “roof” membrane to prevent gasoline vapors from escaping, your vehicle most likely doesn’t.
  4. Finally, pumps have 3 delivery settings: slow, medium, and fast. Use the slow method, if you use fast it will stir up the gas and will evaporate faster. The station’s pumps are corrugated to capture gasoline vapors and put them back in the station’s storage tanks, thereby saving gasoline for the station, the more vapors you create the more you give back to the station.

Hope these tips help you while pumping at the station next time!
