The three most recent incarnations of Doctor Who have all been notable for their style in very different ways. We looked at how you can get each look and add a touch of Time Lord to your style.

Christopher Eccleston

The first incarnation of the revived show, way back in 2005, saw Christopher Eccleston taking the title role. It would be fair to say that his look was more functional and durable than it was inspirational, however it served well to reflect his to the point and serious character, and enabled his darker side to be portrayed strongly. To get the Eccleston look, think simple, casual trends. Because of the lack of colour and basic clothes worn, this is a great look for the older man or those looking to flatter their dimensions. Quite simply: go for all black. Shoes, denim or cotton trousers, t-shirt, and leather jacket. Experiment with different styles of jacket however so you can add your own twist to the look.

David Tennant

There is no question that the look Tennant brought to the role was far more inspirational than previously. It is widely believed that the actor playing the Doctor gets to choose his own wardrobe for the show, so Tennant’s increased level of charisma and engagement led to the look we saw on screens for many years. There is much more creative licence with this look, and it may even be something you have experimented with already. The basis of the look is to wear relaxed fitting tailoring with casual footwear. In the case of Tennant, he went for white Chuck Taylor Converse trainers, however you can be as colourful as you wish and even go for a different style of shoe should it fit your own style.

Matt Smith

“Bow-ties are cool” is one of Smith’s most famous lines and, while his look is the most distinct and the most difficult to pull off well, doing so will see you worshipped as a fashion legend. To make the most of it you really need to try and stick to what Smith does so well, which is contrast lighter pastel coloured shirts with a darker bow tie of the same colour. Basic utility trousers with boots and a tweed jacket finish the look off, however this is where your individual self-awareness may begin to kick in. Accessorise with braces, although I would not recommend a Fez or a Cowboy hat under any circumstances! With all three looks, experiment with a long, belted trench coat as a stylish alternative to the original base. As all three styles have their own elements incorporated within them, it is best to stick to the one that most closely matches your personality, or play around with all three to find the best look for you.
