FDA Warns Recalled Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec, Benadryl, Etc Had Bacteria in It

Many of you may have heard that over 40 varieties of children’s cold medicines were recalled last week.

The initial reason given for the recall was “doesn’t meet quality standards.” Specifically, the McNeil Consumer Healthcare plant in Fort Washington claimed that some products like, children and infants Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec, Benadryl, etc, contained higher than specified concentrations of active ingredients.  Parents were told not to worry, just buy generic products until the recall is over.

Now, a new report by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is telling a much different story. The FDA first met with Johnson and Johnson back in Feb 2010 to discuss a warning letter with manufacturing problems identified at the McNeil Consumer Healthcare plant .  The FDA determined that inspections should be stepped up based on the problems noted in the warning letter.

The FDA inspection report showed that ingredients in over 40 different varieties of children’s cold medicine by Johnson and Johnson were contaminated with bacteria while being manufactured at McNeil Consumer Healthcare plant. The FDA report details how inspectors found problems in April like- lack of laboratory facilities to test drug ingredients, failure to follow up with customer complaints about their product, equipment covered with “thick layers of dust,” equipment held together with duct tape, etc..  Johnson and Johnson had received over 46 complaints over the year about black/dark specks in Tylenol products, but failed to respond or investigate any of them.

FDA officials said that the finished product was not testing positive for contaminants, and serious medical problems from product use was unlikely, but such testing is not definitive. Deborah Autor, director of the FDA drug compliance office, told FOX News, “We think the risk to consumers at this point is remote.” FDA officials also said that they are considering more warning letters, and even pursuing criminal actions.

Parent’s are being instructed to use generic alternatives. However, I think parent’s have the right to know that the recall  isn’t just about dosages being wrong or poor quality, the products were actually contaminated. Maybe it’s just me, but I find it odd that a billion dollar company would “duct tape” equipment ?

  1. Very good and helpful article. Thank you for taking the time to write it.

  2. What is next? The fundamental foundation of medicine will be slowly revealed and we will eventually learn the truth. Money hungry wars are just beginning .

  3. This is a well presented article, Jo. Thanks for sharing. Faith

  4. This type of neglegence is completely unacceptable.Johnson & Johnson should be definately be held libel for such an irresponsible attitude about the safety and quality of their products.

  5. Thought provoking and well written article Jo.

  6. Calls for a thorough inquiry. For every fraud that gets coverage, several others go unreported. When it’s your health, it’s not statistics that’s important.

  7. Great article, Jo! I agree with Jamie, Johnson & Johnson should have been more meticulous then that. I am seriously shocked at their level of negligence. They had complaints for over a year before they actually responded!

  8. Recalling the drugs was the best thing to do under the circumstances.

  9. Well done Ashley. Another excellent reason not to take drugs…Prescription, over the counter, or otherwise.

  10. That’s quite scary. Great reporting.

  11. It is scary, i hope everyone tosses it out of the medicine cabinet.

  12. I have always thought that when I am buying generics (which I almost always do) that they are somehow inferior. Maybe it is the reverse?

  13. I want to know what bacteria was found. My son has had numerous sore throats and takes Zyrtec daily and Motrin for the pain. I really want to know if it could be related.

  14. Great article. More than 95% of the population uses only Johnson & Johnson products for their babies and such negligence should not be tolerated.

  15. really worrying – I have an aversion to drugs anyway so this makes it worse!!
