As Seen on TV Products: Do They Work? 2
by Jo Oliver on Oct 29, 2008 with 15 Comments
There are endless products and gadgets advertised on late night TV. If you are like me, you have often wondered if they work, how they work, and if they do what they claim to do.
Many of you may have seen my first “As Seen On TV” product review. Here are the three products that I have been able to test out this month.
Again, please keep in mind that I am not recommending for you to buy any of the test products that I have used. Neither, am I discouraging you from buying any of the test products that I have used. I am simply sharing my experience with these products.

Maybe I am the only person in the world that has not cooked bacon in the microwave? It just never appealed to me. None the less, I picked up the microwave bacon device and decided to give it try. The product claims to cook bacon that has less fat, less grease, and less cholesterol. Each tray holds 14 pieces of bacon. I don’t know who eats that much bacon.
So, I fill the tray half full. It was fairly easy to get the bacon in the tray and zap it. Aesthetically, the bacon looked perfect. It didn’t have any grease on it. It was crisp and straight. I already had it in my mind that there was no way that the bacon would taste as good as a pan fried piece. However, I was proven wrong. It tasted just as good. And, it was evenly cooked, unlike pan fried bacon.
Conclusion: works just as it says, I would deduct that because the bacon is not saturated in grease, it actually is more healthy. My single complaint is that it is difficult to clean inside the grooves.

This is the one product that I prayed would work. My dogs give me a fit when I cut their toenails, and I can not afford to carry them to a groomer. It never fails that they jerk and bite; which results in cutting the nail in the quick. The commercial for this product shows a dog sitting perfectly still…enjoying his pedicure.
I borrowed a friends “Pedi Paws” to see if I should make the investment. It isn’t a clipper. It is actually a grinder. The sandpaper drum is surrounded by a plastic safety guard. So, I put “Oscar” in a neck lock and go to work. The noise was minimal, but just enough to freak him out. It takes forever to file the nails down, since he is still jerking away. However, the nail was shortened, without blood. The nail was actually much smoother than with clipping. There wasn’t any jagged edges.
Conclusion: works perfectly to prevent harm to the animal, and decrease jagged nails. However, the dog is still not going to sit still for the process, and it takes longer than the few minutes that the commercial touts.

I’m Italian- needless to say pasta is a staple food at my house. I found a pasta express for 2 bucks at my local salvage store. I was doubtful of the product, but wagered on it anyway.
The instruction guide tells you how much water, cooking times, etc.. for a variety of foods. The components are a snap lid, plastic cooking tube, smaller cooking tube, and sleeve. I put a package of spaghetti noodles in the tube, and fill it with boiling water- as instructed. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, and wasn’t hard to get out of the tube. However, I really don’t see the point. I still have to turn the stove on to boil the water. I still have a container to wash. So, why not just cook the pasta on the stove? Conclusion: works well, but does not save time or kitchen energy. Might work well for camping, though?
Please feel free to add your experience with these products…or any others.

I’ve always questioned these products as well. You’ve presented the facts clearly and with great detail. Very good article. Michael

try the “green bags” that are advertised everywhere. They have saved me a fortune.
Secret is to keep the produce/bag interiors dry. Just remove the bags from your fridge every couple days and wipe with a towel (or paper towel). Don’t wash the produce before storing it either, wash it before use.

Good research. I like how you have kept it short yet informative enough.

Jo,
My “Oscar”/”Buddy” won’t let me cut his nails either. I think I would like to try out the pedipaws.
Great work!

Lol..the bacon weave? I would not buy these things. The pedi paws send me spam emails all the time. I would not waste my money on any of them.

I never believe TV ads, even though there are laws to prevent manufacturers lying about their products, I still think that they cn go overboard. I’ve never heard of any of these products.

Lots of gadgets are useless as you stated some here. Thank you for the post.

Thanks for your help. My wife knew about the Pedi-Paw product freaking out the dog. She simply uses a regular nail file on “Dasher”.
As always, great product testing.

I think Ron Popeil is a genius. I haven’t bought anything from his infomercials, and I won’t. Yet I want to every time one comes on.
