As Seen on T.V. Products 3: Do They Work?
by Jo Oliver on Mar 14, 2009 with 13 Comments
There are endless products and gadgets advertised on late night T.V. If you are like me, you often wonder if they work, how they work, and if they do what they claim to do.
This is the third review that I have done. So, you might want to start by reading http://www.gomestic.com/Consumer-Information/As-Seen-on-TV-Products-Do-They-Work-2.319421 and http://www.gomestic.com/Consumer-Information/As-Seen-on-TV-Products-Do-They-Work-2.319421. I am not discouraging or recommending you buy any of the test products. I am simply sharing my experience with these products, as I wondered how many as seen on T.V. products actually work. As I test more, I will keep you updated on what my finding are.
“Strap Perfect”
Claim
This product claims to do two things- use a comfortable concealer to hide bra straps and boost cleavage for a firmer youthful look.
My Research
I bought the Strap Perfect over the phone for $9.99. It came with 6 strap concealers in common bra colors. On the commercial, the woman reaches to the bra straps on her back, and then slides the concealer in place within seconds. I found that it doesn’t take much effort, but it does take a little manipulation to get it in place. You must also loosen your bra straps for it to fit into place. Depending on the bra, it can be a little tight and uncomfortable, but nothing unbearable. Once in place, the bra straps are now centered in a crisscross shape across the back. I first put on a sleeveless shirt, and indeed the straps were completely hidden. The straps were also hidden under a racer back shirt. The Strap Perfect did provide a cleavage boost, but not nearly equivalent to the bulging boobs on the box. Of course, I am a B cup…so the boost may be different for different cup sizes? Please leave any comments if you have a different cup size experience.
Conclusion
Works! Maybe doesn’t provide as much lift as promised, but that is still inconclusive.
“Awesome Auger”
Claim
The tool claims that once attached to an electric drill, a disk will rotate to dig, bore, till, cut, and cultivate. The commercial shows thick roots and shrubbery being cut, compost piles being aerated, paint being mixed, hole being dug, rocks being powered out, etc..
My Research
After kicking and screaming, my dad agreed to help me out with my As Seen On TV review article. It took him all of two minutes to pick up the phone and order the Awesome Auger. My dad went to work on his Mississippi yard. He started with the easiest task of creating seed holes in his freshly tilled garden bed. It effortlessly created a hole. He headed over to a future untilled flower bed site and quickly discovered that the Awesome Auger isn’t so much of an electric auger. The blade essentially spun in place unless he forcefully drove it into the hard ground, pulled it up, and then forced it back down again. After several times of this motion he ended up with a 2 or 3 inch hole. Disappointed, yet determined to prove the tool worked, he headed for a root. The crescent-shape disk actually cut the small root. But, when he headed to a larger stump, the extension shaft broke and it was test over.
Conclusion
While we didn’t make it to compost and weeds, I think that I can conclude that the Awesome Auger isn’t so awesome. It managed fine in soft loose soil, but it just isn’t capable of doing much with hard untilled dirt. I guess that should have been an augur that the Awesome Auger wasn’t going to cut that stump!
“Tweeze Hair Remover”
Claim
This epilator battery-operated device claims to remove leg, face, underarm, and bikini area hair from the root. The marketing claimed it would be “pain free”, leave the area “soft and silky”, and “last for weeks.” It even touts that you can say goodbye to painful shaving and burning creams. The only disclaimers were that the product was not to be used by individuals with pacemakers and not to be used on the eyebrows.
My Research
I am an Italian and German girl. So, I was lucky enough to receive a double pop at the “hairy gene.” I bought the Tweeze Hair Remover from the local drug store for $19.95. I let my face have the privilege of being the first lab rat. I sure wasn’t going to start with my underarm or bikini area! First thing I notice is how loud it was and how rapid the plucking wheel spun. It was actually a little intimidating. After gaining my bravery back, I let this thing loose on my lip. I can not recall ever saying so many curse words…so many times….so quickly. The torture device Tweeze rips the course hair out and just gives the thinner hair a hello tug. After half of my lip was done, I just couldn’t take anymore. After all the pain and irritation subsided, I still found several unwanted hairs.
Conclusion
“Pain free” should be changed to “19.95 for pain.” If you are looking for a pain free alternative to shaving or waxing, then it is best to keep looking. The device essentially works like a pair of tweezers, but the plucking wheel rubbing across your face only adds to the pain and causes irritation. The hair growth return rate wasn’t any slower than regular tweezing.
Alright readers, that is all I can afford for this month. Please let me know what you think of these products, or any others that you would like to know about. If you still crave more you can still check out the other As Seen On Products that I have reviewed.

Advertisement sometimes exaggerate the “REAL” truth of certain merchandise. Good job here!

I love this post you wrote, especially the Billy Mayes “awesome auger”. did you ever see his commercial about the knife sharpener? he said it couldn’t even cut thru a sponge bu if you looked closely, he had the knife tilted so you could barely cut air! LOL!

This is a great article, nice to see if these things really work, most seem like they’d just be scams, but never know when you rock across ones that work
great read!

Great article. I’m still laughing. Even though i’m a man and have never tried any of these products, i’ve always been a little leary of something that costs $19.95, and they throw in two wrist watches and a set of knives when you order within the next 24 hours. Another thing, Billy Mays the spokesman who promotes the selling of the products, has the blackest hair and beard that i’ve ever seen. Well done.
