The Need and The Greed

Need is a desire. Need is something without which we can’t survive. Greed is also a desire, can we call it as a big desire? Greed is a desire to have more than what you actually need. As long as the world exists, need and greed will also exist. Can we tag greed a bad quality especially when we are living in the competitive and modern world today? Living to fulfill your needs alone may hinder your personal growth and development. Should we or shouldn’t we live with greed? Please keep reading…….

Definition of need: What is need? The basic things that you require to live or survive are the needs. For example, you need food, shelter and clothes to live.  These are the basic needs of man. In this modern world, your needs may be a little more than those three basic needs. For example you may need a vehicle to go to one place to another. You may also need some cash reserves to meet the unexpected expenses.  Are there more needs of the modern man?

Definition of greed: What is greed? Greed on the other hand is something you want to have more than you really need. You need a car and if you want to own a luxury car it’s a kind of greed. If you think other people around you should not own a Mercedes Benz when you own one, it’s again a greed.

Need vs greed: You can cite numerous examples of greed. In the olden days kings and emperors  invaded other countries to expand their empires.  Even today we can see so many people want to expand their wealth endlessly. People want to possess more money, better cars, more properties etc. One woman is a need to a man. When he wants to have more women, it’s a greed.

What Buddha said about greed: Desire is the cause for human sufferings said Buddha.  He taught people to get rid of all the desires. Bhagavad Gita also says the same thing, get rid of all the desires.  It’s not possible to remove all the desires from anyone’s mind.  If you want to live without desires that itself is a desire, isn’t it so? What it means is we should get rid of selfish desires. Even this is not practically possible today.  In fact modern management gurus teach us to have great desires and high ambitions in life. I think we can have desires to come up in life and get wealth, assets etc. However, you should get them from honest methods without affecting other people in anyway. You should also encourage and help other people to become successful.

What Mahatma Gandhi said about need and greed: India’s great leader Gandhi excellently said “there is enough on Earth for everybody’s need, but not enough for everybody’s greed”.

Summary: Many great people had talked about greed vs need in the past. It’s ideal to live just fulfilling the basic needs. In this modern world, it’s okay if you can create enormous wealth using the right methods and if you don’t mind others also generating wealth through their hard work. Thanks for reading.

  3. A lot of truth here.

  4. Very good information. I agree with the principles here about greed.

  5. Excellent article…

  6. We can all put away all our greed, sorrows etc through medication.

  7. As a psychological concept, greed is, similarly, an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs. It is typically used to criticize those who seek ..An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth:Greed has inspired many people to pursue a lifestyle, which will be nothing more than trip into excess

  8. I think that either extreme – greed to the point you’re willing to hurt, destroy, or ignore the needs and feelings of others is bad and Buddha’ish selflessness to do without anything/everything desirable are equally destructive. I personally feel that greed, to a modest degree, drives the human spirit toward accomplishment and that “cant quit” attitude. A healthy balance of selflessness and greed is best…at least in my opinion.

  9. What Gordon Gekko said about the greed? :) Good article.

  10. Greed can cost lots of problems. People should learn how to not be greedy.
