Space Illusions: How to Make Your Room Look Bigger
Living in a box? Use these easy methods to trick the eye into thinking your room is bigger than it actually is.

MINIMISE ITEMS. Put in as little furniture as possible. Go for bigger items that serve more than one function rather than a few small items for individual purposes. For example, a two-seater sofa serves better than two armchairs as it can be a focal point in your living room and be able to seat more than two. Or a coffee table with storage shelves underneath.
LIGHTEN UP! More light in a room creates the illusion of space. Light up a room using a fluorescent bulb as it’s brighter than an incandescent one, and helps save on electricity, too. Also, go for lighter curtains instead of heavy drapes so more sunshine gets in during the day.
MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL! Hang mirrors to reflect light and make a room seem airier and wider. The reflection in the mirror creates the illusion of a bigger space. Hang a few different sizes together to make an interesting wall decor.
COLOUR WISELY. If you’re thinking of painting your home, choose colours that complement each other. This creates a visual flow between rooms giving the illusion of a bigger space. White and other light colours are best.
VISUAL TRICK. Use see-through glass top tables, whether on a coffee table or for the dining table. This trick works because it makes you think you’re seeing more space. Just make sure there’s no clutter under the table!
