Lazy Maintenance People

How the maintenance people in my apartment development tried to rip me off.

My roommates boyfriend was cleaning our toilet the other night. In the process he got the brush stuck down in the toilet. When he couldn’t get it out we called maintenance. The maintenance people plunged it a couple of times, said it couldn’t be fixed and we would have to replace it at a cost of $400.

Excuse me?

My roommate and I raised hell. It was hard to tell which of us was complaining louder. It was clear to us that the maintenence people were either being lazy or looking for an excuse to charge us for a new toilet or both.

Finally after we yelled for awhile, the maintenence people went out to their truck, got a tool and pulled the brush out. They still made me reach into the toilet to grab it.

Even though the situation was resolved, I still called the consumer protection agency to file a complaint. We pay too much rent to put up with such poor service. Maybe if the folks in the rental office have to do a little extra paperwork to respond to the compliant they’ll give us better service in the future.

I don’t really understand why people give bad service. It’s just as easy to give good service as it is  to give bad service and feels a heck of a lot better. Maybe people who give bad service don’t like their bosses and are giving bad service to get back at them.

I dunno.
