Even Public Schools are Expensive
Charter schools charge a fee, but public schools cost money too. This is just my rant about paying out …. all of the time.
As a property owner, I pay village tax, county tax and yep, you guessed it, school tax.
Apparently my school taxes only cover… the price of teachers and maintenance… or books… I really don’t know.
Our school has a pool, Parents have to supply swimming clothes, hair covers, goggles, towels and shoes, the school only provides the water and a phys ed/swimming teacher.
We also must buy all of the paper products, binders, glus, scissors, pens, pencils, crayons, etc that our children may need to perform their school work in and out of school. Seriously, the school can not buy notebooks?
We also provide art smocks, snacks in head start, Kleenexes, and hand sanitizer. Why do all the elementary teachers fear germs?
Lunches cost money as well and then there is the al a carte. Why do they tempt the kids with ice cream?
I also have to provide clothing that the school will not find offensive, no south Park apparel, marijuana apparel, religious apparel, etc. What if i were a hippie or abortion activist?
If the children make things (arts and crafts) for the holidays, parents are asked to contribute money for the supplies. I don’t want to buy my own mother’s day gift that is made of noodles and string, do you?
Oh, and then there are pictures, they want us to buy pictures for everything, fall pictures, spring pictures, end of the year pictures, sports pictures, team pictures etc. I know how to use a camera and love candid photos…
Our taxes continue to rise while the cost of them just being in school becomes more and more our burden….
Oh, and let us not forget, that at least where I am at, if my children want to be in sports, i must pay for registration, equipment and clothing, provide transportation and whatever else is needed.
Thanks for reading my rant, I just had to vent… I feel better now (as I pack my daughter for T-ball practice, it cost me $25 just for her to be on the team)

Very poignant article. So, when will it ever change? And when does a “quality” education become the main consideration? Spent a lot of years working in education field and I know exactly what you are writing about. Great article.

It is I think the same thing in our country. Public schools are not totally free. Parents need to pay a certain amount for different reasons.

Friend, the difference is that in the US you’ve got what it’s known as wild capitalism. Where as, in Europe in many countries of western Europe they implemented Keynes ideas of the Welfare State, that is, that the State should provide for those people less favoured, because in the capitalist system there will always be differences in incomes. That is why there’s a universal NHS, State controlled schools, public transport, etc. The financial markets want to remove us from this system to impose us the same as in the US.

Another great article
I remember back in School and that was in England (many, many years ago) everything was for free it was all included in your taxes. Unfortunately I am told that has all changed there also. I have been living with my wife in Canada for many years now and even here it is terribly expensive to send your child to School.
Once again enjoyed reading
Kind Regards

I hate my mom has to pay school taxes when I went to Catholic schools. But I did get an excellent education. Daddy died on a Thursday morning and Monday morning he told me that my Catholic prep high school was the best thing that ever happened to me. I learned so much from those nuns that I wanted to be a nun myself but my parents would not let me and the nuns said I had too many psychiatric problems to be a nun. The biggest regret of my life.

Yes, there are “additional” costs or fees which property taxes or county, city or state taxes do not cover. Think about this – what about those who do not have any children in school – they continue to pay for school taxes as it does not make any difference if there are children in the house or not. I would gladly pay for my grandchildren to play an organized sport, knowing that the experience enriches their lives and provides interaction with children their same age. Perhaps teachers and their unions should take a pay cut…

I own property and so I pay school taxes. I recently started home schooling my daughter. The school she would be in not only doesn’t have a pool they don’t even have enough school books for all the kids in the school, so the education suffers and now by homeschooling her, I still have to pay for a public school system that doesn’t provide books for all their students and I have to provide all the supplies for her education!

My son…my whole family went to Public School and the longer I live, the more I saw that was always a demand money for something. If you didn’t provide the money, your child got left out of activities. I sent my son to a Private High School and even though there was a fee, it was according to our income and they didn’t ask for extra money all the time. You’re right about this.

Your public school fees sounds like all my Catholic schools fees. In grade school, people took turn in bringing in Kleenex and when I was in school we did not have to pay for hand sanitizers because they did not know that much about germs in the 70s and 80s. But with my Catholic high school my parents did not have to pay pools stuff but had to pay $1,800 a year and buy very expensive uniforms.
