Can You Afford to Go Green
Is going green only something that the rich can do or are there creative ways in which the poor can do their part?
Seeing how my light bill is in the thousands I thought I’d visit the topic of whether or not you can truly afford to go green. Some of you are broke, I mean really and truly broke about the only thing you do that is green is to reuse paper bags and shop at the thrift store. But if you wanted to be green on those really big purchases could you afford to do so. Let’s take a look.
AutomobilesI figured I would take a look at the Green Vehicle Guide to see if the Environmental Protection Agency had any good recommendations as to what was Green. Now they don’t have any automobiles on their list that is older than 2000, which is about right because that is when the first hybrids started to appear in the US.
TelevisionsIf you want to go green with your actual television set you are probably looking at purchasing a high definition LCD or Plasma set. There wasn’t anything green about old cathode ray tube sets and I don’t know anyone who still has one that is throwing them out for an LCD that isn’t doing so because they honestly want a high definition set. The most energy efficient televisions, at least in standby mode, are televisions that no one seems to buy. On the flip side of all this Vizio is just now beginning to come out with some energy efficient television sets.
Light bulbsOkay so you cannot afford the energy efficient televisions but you can afford energy efficient lighting, or should be able to. Light bulbs are about the cheapest way to go green there is. But what is the real trade off. Well most light bulbs last between 750 and 3000 hours, more for florescent light bulbs. Florescent light bulbs have always produced more light with less electricity, which naturally, would be more green. The material in florescent light bulbs is a different story, harder to get rid off, and in many ways, less green, than an incandescent light bulb.
